Young hip-hop star needs your vote

Local hip-hop star is in the top three of a presenter search competition on e-TV.

With titles such as Queen of Street Rap, Mix Tape Queen and a nomination from the South African Hip-Hop Awards under her belt, it is clear that Charmaine Mothlabi is aiming for the stars.

Her career began at the age of 14, when she became the only female rapper in a rap group. She simply took off from there. Her passion for hip-hop music has seen her guest-present a YFM radio show and host the Back to the City hip-hop festival, and she’s showing no signs of slowing down.

Her stage name, Chazz Le Hippie, is a combination of her name and the word ‘lehippie’, which is a slang term that she continues to live up to. The 18-year-old is one of the top three in a presenter search competition on e-TV .

“I entered the Shiz Niz presenter search for two reasons – to expand my brand, and because I have dreamed of presenting that show since I was 16. So when the opportunity presented itself, I grabbed it!,” she told the News.

Chazz admits that it’s hard to access media opportunities when you are based on the West Rand, and feels that locals should support each other’s brands a lot more than they are doing now. Being deprived of opportunities because of her age and gender has been one of her challenges, but she still has big dreams for herself.

“I think people should vote for me in the Shiz Niz presenter search because I am all about hip-hop and I possess the right personality for the show,” she says.
