A 30-year-old man has been arrested and linked to 11 rape cases after stalking victims for two years.
Captain Bvuma of the West Rand Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit arrested the suspect at his home in Soweto with the help of his colleagues, on 17 June.
It is alleged that the suspect had scouted for vulnerable females at the taxi ranks and bus stops in Tshepisong, Kagiso from 2014 until 2015, targeting female victims between the ages of 19 and 29.
“The victims alleged they were walking home alone at night when the suspect approached them and offered to accompany them home. Because he said it was not safe to walk alone, the victims would trust the harmless-looking man, but as soon as they reached a piece of open veld, he would push them to the ground, demanding their money and cellphone at knife point,” West Rand Cluster spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said.
In 2016, Captain Bvuma was assigned to investigate all the cases, and his hard work finally paid off when he arrested the suspect at his home in Ennerdale.
The suspect has been linked to 11 cases of rape. He is in custody at the Kagiso Police Station and has already appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court.
“The officer worked very hard after receiving the dockets. His experience over the years in working with sexual offence victims provided him with the know-how to resolve these cases. He worked extra hours, sometimes until the early hours of the morning, to achieve a breakthrough.”
