Industrial action incident in Noordheuwel
A truck driver ran for his life following an industrial action incident in Noordheuwel.
The commotion that occurred recently in Soutpansberg Street, Noordheuwel, was not an attempted hijacking as initially thought – it was instead the aftermath of industrial action taken by employees of a roadside assistance company.
The term ‘industrial action’ refers collectively to any measure taken by trade unions or other organised labour with the intent of reducing productivity in a workplace.
On 6 July, patrollers of the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum were called to the scene, on the corner of Soutpansberg and Sneeuberg Streets, after an abandoned truck was discovered.
At first patrollers thought it was a hijacking, but after police investigated the situation, it came to light that staff at the company are on strike.
Police found the driver of the abandoned vehicle in the area. He had abandoned the vehicle and made a run for it. He told the police that he believed he was being followed. He alleged that he was almost pulled over, so decided to stop the vehicle and flee the scene.
The occupants of the other vehicle then allegedly approached the abandoned vehicle, locked it and drove off with the keys.
The owner of the vehicle arrived later to collect the truck and his employee, and has not opened a case.
