Keep your loved ones safe these holidays
Chairman of the Muldersdrift Community Policing Forum Johan Nell has tips for keeping safe.
It is school holidays and for Johan Nell, chairperson of the Muldersdrift Community Policing Forum, safety for his residents and their little ones is of the utmost importance.
Johan Nell is also a member of the Muldersdrift Communications Actions Group (MCAG) and has a very clear message for criminals: “Crime will not be tolerated in Muldersdrift.”
He encourages residents, the police and private security companies to work together in the fight against crime.
“Our data shows that crime continues to drop in areas where there is a strong and active community security association working with the private security companies who are dominant in the area and the Police,” he told the News.
Nell provided some tips to ensure that residents stay safe during holiday periods:
• Do not visit areas that you are unfamiliar with, especially at night.
• Always be aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
• If you do find yourself confronted by a mugger, do not to resist especially if the perpetrator has a weapon. Instead, give up your valuables, move away from the situation and then find a safe place from which to contact the police.
• If you are carrying a handbag keep it close to your body and do not let it dangle by the straps as that makes it easier for someone to snatch it.
• If you prefer carrying your purse, wallet or cellphone on your person, keep it in your coat’s inside pocket or the front pocket of trousers, rather than in the back pocket.
• Do not leave your guest house or hotel with a large amount of cash on your person or wearing extravagant jewellery. Rather leave these items in a locked safe in your room.
