Community make citizen’s arrest

Residents apprehend a suspect for snatching a cellphone.

Community members recently saved the day when they made a citizen’s arrest in Kagiso.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, 11 July, thanks to their swift action.

This comes after two suspects approached the victim at the corner of the M13 and the old Randfontein Road and demanded his cellphone. When the victim realised one of the suspects was armed with a sharp object with which he threatened to stab the victim, he handed over the phone, and the suspects fled on foot.

The quick-thinking victim noticed a security guard walking by and asked for help. Together they chased after the suspects and with the help of community members, one was apprehended and the police were called. He was arrested and a case docket of robbery was opened.

The suspect will soon appear in court. The second suspect is still at large.

“We urge the community to hand over perpetrators to the police and not to take the law in to their own hands,” said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.
