Eight months in jail for assaulting paramedic

The arrest and conviction of Regina Modisane, 32, is just one of the many successes achieved recently within the West Rand Police Cluster.

Modisane was arrested and found guilty of assaulting an ambulance crew member in April.

“A paramedic was treating a patient when two women assaulted the ambulance driver on 3 April at about 3.45am,” Hekpoort Police spokesperson, Constable Gloria Maswanganye explained. “She also threw stones and damaged the ambulance.”

The complainant tried to calm the women down, but Modisane slapped and punched her.

When the police arrived, Modisane ran off, but the police gave chase and arrested her.

Modisane was found guilty in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court on charges of assault and malicious damage to property, and was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment. She was also fined R7 500.

“This should be a lesson to community members – don’t mess with the authorities when they’re performing their duties,” Maswanganye warned.

More recently, 352 successful arrests were made in a week by the West Rand Police Cluster. Among the suspects arrested were two of the area’s most wanted criminals, on charges of a house robbery and murder committed in Muldersdrift on 6 July.

Other crimes which landed suspects behind bars ranged from rape, robberies, theft, and possession of stolen property, to unlawful possession of explosives and culpable homicide.

The less serious incidents included the arrest of undocumented foreign nationals, persons drinking and driving, and persons selling liquor without a licence.

The suspects are expected to appear in various courts throughout the West Rand soon.

West Rand Police Cluster Commander, Major General Anna Mateisi, expressed her gratitude to all the officers who worked tirelessly to bring all these perpetrators to book.
