One man was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and more arrests were made when police cracked down on the Madala hostel during a search operation in Kagiso.
After receiving numerous complaints about unlawful activities and random shootings at the hostel, Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Sipho Ngubane and his team pounced on hostel residents at 2am on Monday, 25 July and conducted a search operation. The hostel is known as one of the ‘go to’ areas when it comes to unlicensed firearms in Kagiso.
The hostel residents were unprepared for the police visit in the wee hours of the morning. One of these unprepared individuals is now behind bars for possession of an unlicensed firearm, which the police found in a jacket hanging in his room. On searching the jacket, they found a firearm loaded with five rounds of ammunition and an empty cartridge.
Other suspects were arrested for selling alcohol without a license, theft and the possession of dagga.
“People must continue to work closely with the police especially when it comes to reporting unlicensed firearms that are in the wrong hands. Many innocent people are robbed and killed with those firearms, so we must work closer with the community to eradicate them,” said Brigadier Ngubane.
