[PICS] Boxing legend turns 80

Krugersdorp's very own Olympic bronze medalist celebrated a milestone birthday on 8 August.

In 1946 he started boxing at the West Krugersdorp Boy’s Club, and now, at the age of 80, Henry James Loubscher still lives on the West Rand.

Henry, or Hennie as many people call him, has had many remarkable boxing achievements, which is impressive as he never decided to go pro.

In 1956, Hennie was chosen as part of the South African team for the Spring Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. He did his country proud and returned with a bronze medal.

Two years later, in 1958, he represented his country at the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff City, Wales. There he emerged victorious, and brought home gold.

In 1961 he retired from boxing, but in 1964 he returned to the sport. He competed briefly before deciding to become a coach.

He has coached many well-known South African boxers, such as Lance Gibson and Pierre Coetzer. He also coached the South African team that went to South America in 1982. From 1977 to 1990 he was a judge and referee for the sport .

Hennie’s family and friends describe him as “always the centre of mischief” and always up for a good joke.

He spent his birthday weekend in Magaliespark with close friends and family.
