Owl’s life now a hoot
Krugersdorp's recovered Spotted Owl not likely to be released in Krugersdorp.
The Spotted Owl that captured the hearts of Krugersdorp’s residents after falling ill earlier this year is completely out of the woods and 100 per cent recovered.
A resident who discovered the sick owl in her yard took to Facebook for advice. This in turn led to the community joining hands and rooting for Mia the Dancing Queen … who turned out to be a male!
“He is ready to go back into nature as soon as the breeding season is over. Sadly we have to wait, as owls are extremely territorial,” said Vanessa Davis from Wildlife in Crisis.
She doubts that the Mia the Dancing King will be released in the area where he was found.
“Too much time has passed and another spotty would have taken his territory by now. The high prevalence of disease in the area is also of great concern.”
Currently, Krugersdorp’s Dancing King is socialising with 30 other owls who are to be released between November and February.
“We usually do a fair amount of homework and area tracking for diseases and distribution of other breeding partners before we release them,” said Vanessa.
Vanessa will keep in touch with the News about the Dancing King’s progress and release site.
