On this day in history: ‘media terrorists’ restricted
"Freedom of expression will not be allowed to such an extent that it fosters chaos and revolt in South Africa."
On Friday, 28 August 1987, the Minister of Home Affairs and Communication introduced stricter press restrictions.
After being faced with an increase in protest media supporting the democratisation of South Africa, the Minister of Home Affairs and Communication, Stoffel Botha, introduced more press restrictions to censor the unwanted media.
He also labelled the alternative media as ‘media terrorists’ for publicising the violence and sharing revolutionary messages against the State.
He also said, “Freedom of expression will not be allowed to such an extent that it fosters chaos and revolt in South Africa”.
