Justice for bag-snatcher

A man suspected of stealing a woman’s bag near the Lanwen station was severely beaten by train commuters on Sunday, 18 September.
It is believed the suspect was on the train with a number of other commuters, including the woman with the bag.
When the train came to a standstill at the railway station, the suspect allegedly grabbed the woman’s bag and made a run for it. He was chased by other commuters, recognised by one of them and then beaten. It is said that commuters also threw objects at the suspect before he got up and escaped on foot.
Commuters contacted the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF) who arrived shortly thereafter. They immediately called for back-up.
The man fled onto Level Road where patrollers from the CPF, Elect Protect Response (EPR), and Thompson Security cornered him and took him into custody.
The Krugersdorp Railway Police were contacted and the suspect was handed over to them as soon as they arrived on the scene.
An ambulance was also contacted and the suspect was allegedly transported to Leratong Hospital for medical treatment.
“We were so impressed to see how many patrollers arrived when we called for back-up,” said Rose Menezes, the spokesperson for the Sector 4 CPF.
“What was interesting though is that the suspect first said he had been robbed, but it was soon clear the woman was the victim.”
