Man gets 35 years for murdering wife

He stabbed his wife 31 times in full view of their young children – and the law showed him no mercy.

A man was sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment on Monday, 12 September in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court, for the murder of his wife.

Clifford Megale called the mother of his children and demanded that she commit a murder, which she refused to do. A few minutes later, he arrived at the home that his wife shares with their children aged 15, 11 and five and asked to speak to her in private outside the house. Shortly afterwards, the children heard their mother screaming and when they went to investigate they found their father chasing after their bleeding mother. She tried to escape into a room outside but fell to the ground, where her husband knelt down and continued stabbing her.

The 37-year-old then dragged his wife into the room she was trying to escape to and closed the door. The police were called, and arrived to find Megale still in the room and in possession of the murder weapon. The deceased sustained 31 stab wounds.

Megale was sentenced to 35 years’ direct imprisonment for his crime.

“Constable Thebyane has done well in ensuring justice for the bereaved family. The perpetrator deserves his sentence after showing such brutality in front of his children,” said the Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Sipho Ngubane.
