Today is the September Equinox

Although many people celebrate 1 September as the first day of spring, today is considered to be the first day of spring by astronomers.

Today (22 September) is the September equinox, also known as the vernal or spring equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. Astronomers consider this to be the first official day of spring.

During the equinox, the sun shines directly on the equator, and the length of day and night are almost equal. The sun crosses the celestial equator from north to south today at 4.22pm local time.
