A family braai turned tragic after they had made a gruesome discovery in their back yard.
An afternoon of fun and games during a family braai came to a halt on Saturday, 24 September when a family realised that one of their dogs, Herbie, was missing.
The family has three small dogs and two boerboels, and they found it strange that Herbie, their Pekingese, was not running around among the family members.
“While we were braaiing, I asked my dad if he had seen Herbie. He went to look for him, and eventually found him …” Simone Els said.
Their beloved dog was lying at the far end of their back yard with a wound to its neck. The autopsy performed by the Roodepoort SPCA revealed that the dog had sustained a bullet wound to the neck. The .22 bullet splintered on impact and cut through Herbie’s neck.
For 12 years, Herbie was a part of the family and loved by all. Recently, the dogs in the area have been very vocal, and Herbie was a part of the barking choir.
There are no leads in this incident, and the family is urging the community to come forward with any information that they may have.
“Our children play in the garden. What if they shot one of the children? We want to keep our family safe,” Simone said.
