Security guard murdered on new strip mall site

Ten suspects approached the security guards and left after fatally shooting one guard.

One security guard died and another two were injured after being attacked by armed robbers at the new shopping centre on Robert Broom Drive.

On Monday, 10 October, it is alleged that 10 suspects approached the security guards of the Village View Shopping Centre, forcefully tied their hands and feet and shot them.

One security guard received a fatal bullet wound. The remaining wounded security guards were taken to a nearby hospital after the suspects fled the scene.

The suspects allegedly stole cables from the property. Krugersdorp Police are now investigating a case of murder and business robbery. The Sector 7 Community Policing Forum (CPF) assisted the Trio Task Team of the police in obtaining CCTV footage of the incident.

They would like to assure the public that although this incident was an atrocious act, they plan to conduct visible patrols throughout the area and the building site itself.

“We will be increasing the patroller activity there immediately and want to assure the public that we will work tirelessly to ensure that the area stays as safe as possible,” Ramon Collins, CPF Sector 7 spokesperson said.

The CPF urges community members to volunteer for their patroller positions to ensure there are enough eyes and ears in the area.

“Sector 7 is becoming a very vibrant area of Krugersdorp and although the patrolling team is seeing positive growth with more than 30 active patrollers, we need all the help we can get as patrols are done on a voluntary basis.”

The next patrollers’ meeting is on Monday, 24 October at 7pm at the Hobby Park lapa on Robert Broom Drive, Noordheuwel and interested volunteers are urged to attend.

“Our deepest and sincerest condolences go out to the loved ones of the victim(s) of this senseless crime,” Collins said.

The police are also appealing to the community to assist with information that could help trace the suspects. Information can be forwarded to 011 951 1151.
