Police concerned about spike in assaults
“Disorderly conduct will not be tolerated.”
Lieutenant Colonel Tsoaedi, Tarlton Police station commander expressed her concern about the manner in which some people behaved during the past week, especially while under the influence of alcohol.
Within two days Tarlton Police arrested eight suspects – male and female – on assault charges, some with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Most of those arrested were under the influence of alcohol. Their ages ranged from 16 to 46.
In one of the cases a 16-year-old minor was arrested on charges of assault. It is believed the suspect was fighting with his cousin when the victim intervened. The suspect allegedly assaulted the victim with a broken beer bottle, causing numerous moderate injuries. The suspect was later traced and arrested.
In another incident police arrested four female suspects who allegedly also assaulted their victims. These women are facing domestic-violence charges as well.
Tarlton Police condemn the consumption of alcohol because of the behavioural and societal problems associated with people under the influence. “We have experienced an increase in contact crimes due to alcohol consumption,” Constable Lucky Matome, Tarlton Police spokesperson said.
“Disorderly conduct will not be tolerated,” Tsoaedi said.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court soon.
