Police give rape warning
There has been an increased number of rapes even after a serial rapist was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Police are warning residents about rapists who operate alongside the Leratong Hospital and the taxi rank on Adcock Street in Chamdor.
This problem has been ongoing since July 2015, when a serial rapist started to ambush, rob and rape women in this area. The serial rapist was arrested by the Kagiso Police, found guilty on seven counts of rape, and received seven life sentences and more than 100 years of additional imprisonment.
This year, the trend seem to be continuing, causing the police great concern. A woman was raped near the hospital on Sunday, 10 October. She, her husband and son were travelling on Albertina Sisulu Road when their vehicle was hit from behind. They climbed out of their car to inspect the damages.
“While the victim’s husband was calling the police, he ran out of airtime. His wife decided to go to the nearest filling station next to the hospital, but as she walked towards it she noticed a man next to her. She tried to scream but the suspect threatened her with a knife, covered her mouth with his hand and then dragged her in to the bushes, where he raped her,” said a spokesperson for the Kagiso Police Station, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.
The man disappeared in to the bushes nearby and has not yet been caught.
The Kagiso Police advise residents and motorists to always travel in groups and to remain alert, especially at night.
“Suspects will always try to be smarter than their victims.
They hide in dark spots and watch their victims from a distance. It is therefore not safe to walk alone at night in that area,” warned the Kagiso station commander, Brigadier Ngubane.
