Diabetes awareness drive keeps growing
Over 300 people were tested.
The Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital‘s annual diabetes drive was a huge success, as 360 people were tested.
The hospital invited the community to participate in the drive, which took place on 14 November, and anybody who felt the need to get tested was welcome to do so.
“Each and every citizen must know their health status,” participant Gulia Masutene said.

A hospital representative told the News the number of diabetes incidents has increased in the last few years. The hospital has therefore decided to implement the drive more frequently to make people aware of their health status.
People are generally not sufficiently educated about diabetes.
The hospital staff gave out some advice for people who have diabetes and handed out pamphlets for further assistance. The greatest part of the drive was that you did not need to belong to a medical aid to get tested, and the test was done free of charge.
The drive was initiated approximately five years ago. Each year, members of the community receive education about their health.

If you experience signs of diabetes you should see a doctor as soon as possible. The most common signs are:
• Tiredness
• Severe weight loss
• Extreme fatigue
• Frequent urination
• Constant thirst
“I urge everyone to do just as I did,” said Gulia.
The hospital strives to create more awareness and increases the size of the drive every year.
