Free spay drive and a thankful community
The drive will continue next year in various parts of Krugersdorp.
Spaying or neutering your pet can leave a big hole in your pocket if you have it done at your nearest veterinarian. Sterilisation can cost up to R1 900, depending on the animal’s weight and sex.
The 9th Day Animal Shelter, in conjunction with State veterinarians from Randfontein, had a ‘Spay Day’ drive in Burgershoop on 23 November. Veterinary students who are completing their degrees assisted the members of the community by spaying their furry friends – at no cost at all! The drive, which took place in a park in Burgershoop, was open to all the community’s furry friends.
“We managed to spay 21 dogs today,” said Charmaine Booysen, the founder of The 9th Day Animal Shelter .
Members of the community brought their dogs along and waited while the veterinarians spayed them. The dogs had to stay for 15 to 30 minutes under veterinary supervision before they could go back home.

“I think it’s a wonderful drive for people who are not able to afford the vet’s fees,” said community member Estelle Potgieter.
Big and small dogs were spayed and owners were very happy and thankful.
“Even though it’s hard work, it’s worth the effort,” said veterinarian Caitlin Sterley.
Sadly, this campaign was the last one for the year, but they will continue next year in various parts of Krugersdorp.
