Holiday shopping can be chaotic, tiring and frustrating. Juggling countless bags, bumping into several people, keeping an eye on your children and searching for Christmas gifts makes you an attractive target during the festive season.

People become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crimes, and thieves are waiting for every possible chance to strike and make a move as people are shopping for Christmas gifts. They’re looking to grab wallets, handbags and purses, and your purchases.

There is always an increase in the number of people out and about shopping at malls, grocery stores and waiting in lines at ATM machines.

Thieves know that the police are extremely busy during the festive season and take advantage of the situation.

Here are some tips for shopping during the festive season:

• Men are advised not to keep their wallets in their back pockets – rather use a front pocket

• Women should carry their handbags close to their bodies, with the opening facing towards them

• Keep track of all your purchases by consolidating them into one or two bags

• Never let your purchases out of your sight

• Never walk around with your cellphone or purse in your hand

• Avoid wearing expensive jewellery

• Avoid carrying a large amount of cash
