Who is Rehab for Many actually begging for?

They do not have permission to be at the different intersections and the organisation is not registered.

On paper, Rehab for Many is there to help drug addicts, the homeless and poorest of the poor, but in reality things do not add up.

The community of Krugersdorp recently started asking questions about who these people with their yellow bibs at several intersections in and around Krugersdorp are. Their bibs have the name ‘Rehab for Many’ printed on them.

These three men did not want the News to take a photo of them.

The News decided to approach the group of people who convene at various intersections and ask them about their work. On arrival, the News saw five people standing at the intersection of Viljoen and Cecil Knight Streets, near Key West Shopping Centre, asking for donations from the public.

One of the ‘beggars’ told the News that the organisation was started by a community member, Stebastiaan Truter. Stebastiaan started the organisation a few months ago, when he found a number of homeless people, drug addicts and very poor people. He took them in and wants them to ask for donations from 6am until 10am and then again from 4pm until 7pm on a daily basis. He feels that it keeps their minds active and that it also helps them with a bit of exercise.

Stebastiaan has 10 people in his care at the moment. He told the News that he is opening a home for these people on 1 March in Krugersdorp West and will take in more people then. According to Stebastiaan, these people use the money they get to buy food, clothes and pay for shelter.

He says they stay in shelters at night and meet at their different intersections every day.

When asked whether his organisation is a registered non-profit organisation, he admitted that it is not registered as of yet and that he is planning to get it done as soon as possible.

“These people want to be better persons, they want to be drug- and alcohol-free and they want to reunite with their family members, and I will help them to achieve this,” said Stebastiaan.

He also told the News that they do not have any permission to be at the different intersections, but he will speak to the authorities as soon as possible.

Do you think that Stebastiaan and his team are legitimately ‘begging’ for donations to better their situation? Leave your comment, the News would love to know what you think.
