Dineo touches down on SA soil – Media storm worse than ex-cyclone

The South African Weather service predicts only light rain for Krugersdorp

Cyclone Dineo is on everybody’s lips, but will it hit our community?

Reports state that Dineo has lashed Mozambique with 200mm of rain. Other parts of Southern Africa however, have not been affected as severely as initially thought. The worst part of the storm for most residents of Gauteng is how to hide from the cold.  One way South Africans have chosen to cope with the cold and rain is using social media as entertainment. Turns out the media storm hit Gauteng harder than the ex-cyclone.

Twitter

One of the social media platforms affected by storm is Twitter*.  A Twitter user started the #ThingsDineoShouldTakeWithHer. The hash tag has caused such a stir on Twitter that it has been trending since this morning, 17 February.

Many users have added their own ideas of what Dineo should take with her when she eventually passes over South Africa.  Here are some of the funniest tweets:

#ThingsDineoShouldTakeWithHer: 10kgs of my weight

#ThingsDineoShouldTakeWithHer: The guys that squeezed Juju’s balls.

Other posts are more serious and address current issues in a satirical manner:

#ThingsDineoShouldTakeWithHer: People who go to church to drink petrol and Dettol.

Even though it is a serious matter, South Africans have found a way to cope with the stress of a severe storm. Stay tucked in bed to avoid the wet and chilly weekend predicted, and join in on the fun on Twitter.

Let us know if there is anything you would like Dineo to take with her when she leaves South African soil.

Read the definitions of Twitter, ‘hash tags’, and ‘trending’ below:

Twitter is an online social media website used to share thoughts and ideas with those who are part of the platform.

Twitter users use hash tags (or #) in front of keywords that can eventually be traced in a search box by another user.

When a large number of users search for a specific hashtag, the keyword starts to trend.
