Final warning: big operation on its way
The Department feels that they are not even supposed to give the public warnings, but they are left to take action.
Trading on and occupying pavements seems to have become a major trend in Krugersdorp. It does however, remain illegal to do so.
The News recently published an article about the use of pavements by traders in Krugersdorp. Journalist Nadine Maré received numerous complaints about pavements being used by illegal traders, motorists parking their vehicles on them and persons that obstruct pavements for other reasons.

“The National Road Traffic Act states very clearly that a pavement is a portion of a road solely designated for use of pedestrians, so we as the Traffic Department are not going to tolerate anyone that uses pavements for any other purpose,” said Mogale City Traffic Department spokesperson, Papi Motaung.
Most of the businesses around Krugersdorp, especially panel beaters, car traders and hawkers make it difficult to walk and push prams on the pavement . According to Motaung, the law protects everyone, including pedestrians, by providing designated spaces for them to walk. That way, they do not walk in the road where they could be bumped by cars.
Another problem the Department is concerned about is the oil spills left by panel beaters and mechanics on the pavements. This poses a danger to both pedestrians and motorists as the pavements become slippery, especially when it is raining.
The Mogale City Traffic Department is therefore planning a big operation during the month of May to clear the pavements of illegal users, and according to Motaung, “Offenders will be fined.”
