Here's seven things that happened around the world on this day in history.

As one enters this 24th day of June, it is important to embrace its historical importance, no matter how insignificant it might seem. We should not only keep South Africa’s history in mind, but include that of the rest of the world.

Here’s what happened around the world on this day in history according to onthisday.com:

• France – In 1901, the first major exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s artwork opened at a gallery on Paris’ Rue Lafitte, a street known for its prestigious art galleries.

• USA – In 1975, an Eastern Airlines jet crashed near John F Kennedy International Airport in New York City, killing 115 people. This area experienced heavy thunderstorms, winds and rain and the crash is blamed on a sudden wind shift created by the storm.

• USA – On this day in 1983, the Challenger space shuttle returned to Earth and landed in California after a successful six-day flight. This was also the first flight that carried an American woman, Sally Ride, into space.

• Peru – In 2001, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale struck the city of Arequipa in Southern Peru, leaving at least 50 dead and many more injured. Authorities subsequently declared the area a disaster zone.

• Pakistan – In 2007, severe storms struck Karachi in southern Pakistan, leaving hundreds dead and most of the city without power.

• USA – In 2009, a high school coach was shot and killed in Iowa by a 24-year-old man. Even though students were present, none of them was injured.

• Australia – On this day in 2010, Julia Gillard became Australia’s first female Prime Minister, when she replaced Kevin Rudd, who was removed in a surprising leadership vote in the Labour Party.
