Pedestrian knocked down on Luipaard Street

A woman was run down by a vehicle this morning during rush hour traffic.

A woman was knocked down by a vehicle on the corner of Luipaard and Boshoff Streets in Krugersdorp’s CBD at 7.10am this morning.

The woman lay on the street, helplessly waiting for emergency services to arrive. Fortunately, a professional nurse from Tarlton Clinic, Lisa Jansen, arrived a few minutes after the News and offered medical assistance. A nearby church assisted with blankets while everyone waited impatiently for local ambulance services to arrive.

The first people expected to arrive at an incident of this nature, namely the police and the traffic police, were nowhere to be seen.

The woman lay in the road for at least an hour before emergency services arrived.

Jansen and a number of bystanders kept phoning the emergency services, directing the ambulance to the scene. Sector 5 Community Policing Forum members also called for assistance.

The 25-year-old foreign national who struck the victim, breaking the windscreen of his vehicle in the process, said the traffic light was green for him to cross the intersection when the victim, Rinah Phakedi, stepped into the street.

An eyewitness, Joseph Sekae, confirmed that the woman had attempted to cross the road while the traffic light was green for driver of the vehicle.

“Luckily the road was not busy at the time and the car was not travelling at high speed; however, she seemed to have sustained relatively serious injuries as she could not move,” said Sekae.

ER24 emergency services arrived more than an hour after the incident occurred. The paramedics took statements from the driver and the victim after she had been carefully lifted into the ambulance.

One of the paramedics on the scene, Bongani Makhubela, said the woman was being transported to Lenmed Private Hospital in Randfontein for further medical assistance.
