Elderly reach out to toddlers for Madiba Day

With over 60 knitted blankets, six beds and a great many treats, numerous care-workers took to the streets of Munsieville with the aim of making a difference.

Mandela Day saw approximately 30 elderly women from the Munsieville Care for the Aged Centre knitting their hearts out for the local children in need.

With over 60 knitted blankets, six beds and a great many treats, numerous care-workers from this centre took to the streets of Munsieville with the aim of making a difference in the lives of local children.

They visited three crèches, namely Tshwelopele Crèche, Saint Daniel’s Day Care and Molapo’s Day Care, and the children were thrilled to receive the brightly coloured blankets that had been made with extra love.

According to Brenda Manabels, one of the coordinators, these women have poured their hearts into these blankets for approximately two months, and are now planning on repeating this project every year.

“Our main objective is to give back to the community. Many of these elderly women have grandchildren in the crèches of Munsieville, which means they are creating a network of knitting for their grandchildren, as well as their neighbour’s grandchildren.” Brenda said.

This project not only benefits the lives of young children, but also the lives of the elderly as the activities help keep them busy and relieve stress.

“Through this beautiful Mandela Day project the children get to stay warm and the elderly get to share and develop their skills. It goes both ways, and it’s beautiful.

It is our aim to do this every year in remembrance of Madiba’s legacy,” Brenda concluded.
