Mandela Day: a little goes a long way

You don't need to give something tangible this Mandela Day, just give what is in your heart and spare at least 67 minutes.

International Mandela Day is commemorated by doing something beneficial for at least one person, without payment, for 67 minutes.

Many people say there is not enough time to make a difference because this day is not a public holiday, however, making a difference does not require that much time or money.

The working class of Krugersdorp who remember Nelson Mandela’s words admit that making a small difference is in their hands. The News briefly spoke to Tebogo Ntsime from Kagiso, an electrical engineering student at the South West College in Krugersdorp West who said he will motivate high school drop-outs turned drug addicts in his neighbourhood, trying to organise rehabilitation centres around the West Rand and helping people distribute their CVs for job applications.

He said this will take more than 67 minutes, so he will make this his goal for the next several months.

Nick Steyn said he will cut the grass at the house of his neighbours, an elderly couple whose children live far away.

“My neighbours are old and fragile, so when I come home from work at about 5.45pm I will go to their house – they have no idea, so it will be a surprise,” said Nick.

Maria Nkadimeng, a domestic worker in Krugersdorp West, talked about how she will commemorate this day.

“I will be going to work as usual, but because my lunch is for an hour, I will continue knitting a blanket I was making for myself, but I will now offer it as a gift to one of the orphans who stay in my neighbourhood of Munsieville – hopefully it will be complete by the end of the day,” said Maria.

Three people will do something worthy for ordinary members of their community who least expect it, even though the beneficiaries may not even know their names. That is the essence of Mandela Day.
