Leo Club provides ‘snugglers’ to those in need

What is a 'snuggler', and who would get one?

The Krugersdorp Leo Club used a bit of love, hope, sincere thoughts and a few other necessities to put together approximately 20 Lions ‘snugglers’ in an effort to ease the winter chill for the homeless people of Krugersdorp.

This is a project that is undertaken by Leos all over the world, all year round, and includes the assembling and distribution of Lions ‘snugglers’.

But what is a Lions ‘snuggler’, and who would receive one of them? According to Andrea Hawla, Leo Club adviser, a ‘snuggler’ is a sleeping bag made from newspaper and soft plastic which serves as a durable, mobile ‘bed’ for the people living on the streets.

Weighing very little, because of the newspapers and the thickness of the plastic, these sleeping bags not only ensure warmth, but also some resistance against the worst rain and winds.

On Tuesday, 25 July, the Krugersdorp Leo Club assembled and distributed about 20 of these sleeping bags to the homeless people across Krugersdorp as they drove through town looking for people in need.

“Not only is this an effective way of keeping the extreme cold at bay, it’s an affordable and quick way of helping someone in need, as it only takes about 30 minutes to make one,” Andrea said.

Before handing out the ‘snugglers’, the Leos personalised each sleeping bag by writing messages on them for the new owners.

According to Kiara Bendeman, Leo Club president, they aim to make more ‘snugglers’ if possible, to ensure that even more people living on the streets have warmer nights.

“I really do hope we can help as many people as possible during this cold winter, because Krugersdorp, unfortunately, has a great many homeless people,” she explained.

The Leo Club is passionate about helping where they can and is looking forward to turning this town around.
