When manna falls from heaven, pedestrians scoop it up
"As dit pap reën, moet jy skep. As dit mielies reën, moet jy nie skep nie?"
South Africans have never ceased to see the positive side of a bad situation. After all, it’s how we cope with bad news.
On Monday, 24 July the driver of a truck carrying maize lost control and it overturned at the R28 offramp towards the N14.

The spilled maize covered the road, the pavement, the traffic island and even a ditch next to the road.
Pedestrians walked in it ankle-deep.

Once the truck was removed from the scene and the driver deemed okay, numerous pedestrians saw an opportunity to gather the maize and take it home to feed their chickens.
With 20 litre buckets and plastic bags they picked up most of the maize from the middle of the road.

A Tata bakkie with four men on the back even pulled over. The men, each with a shovel, jumped off and started scooping the maize kernels onto the back of the bakkie.
When the News asked Susan Mahlangu, one of the ‘harvesters’, why they were picking up the maize, she replied with a question.
“As dit pap reën, moet jy skep. Nou hoekom as dit mielies reën, moet jy nie skep nie?” she asked.
