Mindalore youngster’s business thriving

Ramphele and his associate Mbatha run a part-time post waste removal business that has been ongoing from 2015 in Mindalore.

Many an economist will say that the country’s economic future lies in entrepreneurship. In 2015, two friends’ lust for making extra money resulted in a small business venture which renders cleaning services to garbage bins.

How does this work, you may ask?

Mathabatha Noko Ramphele and his friend, Thulani Mbatha, the co-founders of Mbatha & Ramphele, had their humble beginnings when they started cleaning their neighbours’ garbage bins after they were emptied by the municipal refuse removers. Like any other business enterprise, this small business came with challenges. “The challenges we face are primarily from the waste removal companies that initially remove the refuse – the smooth running of our business depends on how early or late the refuse is removed, but there is no specific time when the garbage is collected,” said Ramphele.

Another challenge, according to the University of Johannesburg student, is striking a balance between an efficient delivery of services and keeping clients and employees satisfied. The business’ staff includes a bookkeeper, administrator, a supervisor, cleaners and public relations officer. Ramphele said their business required a little start-up capital which enabled them to get their business up and running. To market their services, neighbours referred them to one another and the most effective tool was door-to-door promotions.

So what does a young entrepreneur like Ramphele do during his spare time?

“I re-invest my time and profits into social development and activities, running other small businesses such as Loco, a street culture clothing brand, Vatti, a bottled-water brand, and Loco Entertainment which organises youth events with local celebrities,” said Ramphele.

He said they are looking into spreading their wings in the near future, and not just cater to Mindalore. They hope the community will act as a reference for the excellence services they offer.
