Fibre-optic cables are the future of internet connectivity

For Krugersdorp to qualify for the construction there are still a large number of residents who first need to show interest.

Internet connectivity over fibre-optic networks has become the gold standard for fast, high-quality data transmission for any internet user. But why should one consider fibre-optic cables as opposed to the traditional copper cables?

According to www.atlantech.net there are at least eight main advantages as to why fibre-optic networks are the way to go.

Firstly, investing in fibre-optic internet can significantly increase one’s bandwidth potential and increase the upload and download speed. With this technological advancement the concept of ‘waiting for things to load’ is about to be a thing of the past.

Thirdly, the signal for copper internet networks degrades as the signal is carried from the central office where as fibre was originally used for long-haul networks. Therefore fibre-optic cables can connect through larger distances. Fibre-optic internet is also a cost-effective way of instantly increasing internet security.

While various factors can cause outages such as temperature fluctuations, severe weather conditions and moisture when making use of copper cable based internet, fibre is less prone to any of these factors including interference from electronic or radio signals. The speed of internet transmitted via copper cable is directly correlated with the weight of the cable used. The speed of a fibre cable is not connected to its size and it weights much less than copper, which makes it easier to use in small spaces.

Not only is fibre more cost-effective, it’s also sturdier as it can withstand more pressure than copper cables and is far less likely to be damaged during routine operations in close proximity.

This is why Vumatel – a network company that installs high-speed open-access fibre – needs 30 per cent of a suburb’s interest before installing these cables.

Once enough residents have shown their interest, the suburb will qualify for the construction of the network. For Krugersdorp to qualify for the construction there are still a large number of residents who first need to show interest.
