Disabled race into the night

For more than 20 years the Khosa Sports Club and the Krugersdorp Lions Club have jointly hosted an annual Lions Khosa Night Race for the disabled, and this year was no exception.

During the afternoon of Wednesday, 18 November, motorists from the Kenmare area were intrigued by the sight of approximately 150 disabled persons running, walking and rolling along in wheelchairs, despite their respective disabilities.

Each year, during the month of October, a number of both mentally and physically challenged people gather at the Khosa Sports Club where they embark on an approximately two kilometre race, leaving their disabilities at the starting mark.

Adults and children from the Gateway School, West Rand School and Logwood Village accompanied by their helpers were to be seen tackling the challenge with strength, pride and lots of laughter.

“We do this so they can also get the opportunity to feel normal, and compete in these races like everybody else,” Peggy du Plooy, one of the Lions members said.

“We are so privileged to be able to host this for them. Every year they come back better and stronger, and that’s what we love to see.”

With the help of the Leos Club they rewarded every participant with a medal, boerewors rolls, cold drinks and sweets.

“We love giving back to the community and we look forward to continue doing this every year,” Shaun Ulyate, Khosa Running Club Chairperson concluded.
