Local school receives special project visit

The ultimate aim is to restore the dignity of menstruating girls in rural schools.

On Monday, 23 October over 350 teenage girls were overwhelmed when Margaret Hirsch, Chief Operating Officer of the Hirsch Group, visited their rural school as part of the Girls with Dignity project.

These were the girls from the Matla Combined School in Kromdraai, who received a special visit from the Struben’s Valley branch of the Hirsch’s group.

Margaret motivated and empowered the learners to always strive to be the best they can be. The ultimate aim is to restore the dignity of menstruating young ladies in rural schools, by providing them with the Subz washable pads and panties that will allow the girls not to miss school.

These pantie packs have been put to the test in various other schools, and the results were astonishing – there was a visible increase in the girls’ grades.

“These girls have been missing months of their education every year. I realised that if I could help them with these pantie packs, their lives would be changed, as they would be able to attend school every day,” said Margaret.

The packs consist of press-studded sanitary pads that clip into the pantie, which is also included in the pack. These packs are very user-friendly as the pads, which are made of a hydrophobic fabric, clip on and off easily.

These panties and their pads are fully washable and therefore reusable, and are likely to last for up to five years.

“We really went the extra mile to ensure only the best for these girls. It was all worth it, and we were more than honoured to do this for them,” Public Relation Officers Lisa Gailey and Narisha Somaroo said.
