Local artist paints a bright future

Some of his earliest memories include blending the vivid colours of markers and coloured pencils in colouring books.

Meet local artist, Michael van der Walt who has been living the dream through his pencil since the age of about five.

He lives in a world where anything is possible – anything one can imagine, dream or think of. He is a fantasiser and a creator. He is an artist.

Some of his earliest memories include blending the vivid colours of markers and coloured pencils in colouring books.

“I never liked wax crayons, so I didn’t use them. I remember using mostly markers to draw or make something – especially dragonflies, for some reason,” he said.

Later, at the age of about nine, he took art classes for two years and was taught to work with oil pastels.

However, his love for painting only really developed in high school when he pursued mostly art subjects. There he learnt how paint with his now favourite medium – oil paints – and acrylics.

After school, he continued pursuing by taking a course in graphic design. Luckily the world of digital art didn’t stop him from creating authentic, raw paintings.

“I always practise and try something new – when something inspires me, I go for it. The more I practise, the easier it gets. From vintage cars to profiles, and even landscapes, I love them all,” he said.

He added that even though he’s still at the beginning, he would like to go very big in future.

“I am still experimenting with all the different techniques and thus far I absolutely love painting with some texture,” he said.

“My advice to other artists would be to never give up. The more you practice, the better you get. You are your own biggest critic, so don’t worry, it’ll come out beautifully.”
