Warnings against matric Pens down Parties sent to parents

"All sorts of ungodly activities are done that needs to be condemned in all fronts."

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) through the Social Cluster departments has organised activities for youth during the holiday period to prevent matrics who have finished their final exams from going to “pens down parties” that often lead to tragic incidents.

These parties celebrate the end of the exams.

“All sorts of ungodly activities take place at such events, including indulging in drugs, unprotected sex, tearing of school uniform. This behaviour needs to be condemned on all fronts,” said Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education.

MEC of Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, added that they “plead with parents and members of the community to discourage these activities since they have the potential to rob our children of their future endeavours. There are people who have lost everything because of these activities, hence the warning to our children.”

The cluster has appointed facilitators, caregivers and site managers for the School Holiday Programme which will run for the first week of December.

The school holiday programme creates opportunities for learners, by exposing them to various places of interest in the province. Learners will transported to various heritage sites as part of the programme known as “the know your province campaign”. The following places will be visited: Johannesburg Zoo, Freedom Park, Constitution Hill, Maropeng and Gold Reef City.

“… our children need to know that there are more important things in life [than post-matric parties] and that the consequences are sometimes detrimental. We encourage our learners to donate their school uniforms to their schools to be used by those who may need them, rather than tearing them up,” said Lesufi.
