Here’s what Mogale’s Heritage, Arts and Culture Section has to offer

A few of the Section's objectives include the promotion and preservation of Mogale City Museum and the museum collection.

Many Krugersdorp residents are aware of Mogale City’s Heritage, Arts and Culture Section, but only few are familiar with what it offers and aims for.

A few of the Section’s objectives include the promotion and preservation of Mogale City Museum and the museum collection. Through this they are able to conduct group, educational or informative tours to learners and tourists.

With the museum being situated at a very accessible location in the CBD, they are able to provide regular visual art exhibitions to benefit local and upcoming artists. They also focus on the preservation of heritage resources through assisting with application for alterations, additions and demolitions of buildings older than 60 years as per the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999.

Another objective is the identification and protection of places that have heritage significance as well as the development and promotion of the local creative industry, such as performing arts, film and theatre.

As part of the Section’s involvement, it facilitates participation in arts and culture festivals and events such as The Open Spring Exhibition, GoWest! Festival and other provincial and national events.

Here is a list of programmes implemented within the last few months:

• Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Geleza Kleva Workshop: This was a collaborative initiative between the Gauteng Provincial Government and Mogale City Local Municipality. The Workshop was held on 24 August 2017 at the Mogale City Museum. This platform was created purposefully to teach unknown musicians the basics of the music industry and to help would-be artists to gain a foothold in the industry. Eighty-three local artists from Mogale City attended the workshop. The musicians were mentored by three knowledgeable experts from the Joy of Jazz including author of the book South African Music Business and Wits lecturer; Jonathan Shaw.

• Open Spring Arts and Crafts Show: The Show held on 29 September 2017 was aimed at giving artists and crafters an opportunity to promote and market their art and craft work. The Art and Crafts Show was attended by 85 local artists and crafters. A wide range of art works such as house décor, fashion design, pottery, fine arts, crafts, knitting, wood and stone caving, and beads were on sale. Local communities had an opportunity to support artists by buying the items.

• Heritage Awareness Outreach Programme: The Heritage, Arts and Culture Section hosted the programme for the Grade 7 pupils of Tsholetsega Public School in Kagiso on 24 October 2017. The Section established the programme to encourage local communities, particularly school children, to consider the importance of cultural heritage in their lives.

• Visual Arts Exhibition: The exhibition was officially opened on 29 November 2017 at the Mogale City Museum. Sixteen artists exhibited their work. The official opening was attended by 43 people in total. The Section hosted the exhibition to —

· support local artists in marketing their artworks

· create awareness of the Museum and its services to the Mogale City community

· provide an enabling environment for artists to network

· give an opportunity to artists to sell their artworks

Local artists are encouraged to register on the Mogale City Arts and Culture database to ensure smooth communication between the municipality and the local arts and culture community whenever there are events and programmes or when there is information to be shared with the local artists.
