Pango passengers fly high
Vibrant children raised their hands enthusiastically when asked who wanted to become a pilot.
More than 40 underage passengers from Pango Camp were taken on board one of the metal birds they often see in the sky. The purpose? To learn more about them.
Their pilot was non other than community member, An-Mari Tolmay who – with the help of a few kind-hearted sponsors – came up with the idea of inviting a group of underprivileged children to join her on a trip to some exciting destinations.
First up was Helivate Helicopter Services at the Jack Taylor Airfield where Chief Flight Instructor Hayley Cunning, student pilot and operations controller Animike Cloete and private pilot Francois Tolmay educated the children about helicopters and aircraft.
“New dreams were born when the children had an up-close experience with Alouette, Bell and Robinson helicopters as well as a Cessna fixed-wing aircraft,” An-Mari said.
When Hayley asked the group of vibrant children who wanted to become a pilot one day, it is safe to say that nearly all of them raised their hands enthusiastically.
After learning a bit more about the ins and the outs of the flying objects, the outing culminated in their second destination when they were treated to a scrumptious two-course meal at Princess Crossing Shopping Centre in Roodepoort. After stuffing their tummies, they played in the playground to their hearts’ content.
“It was a day of great excitement and an exhilarating outing for these children. Our sincere appreciation goes to all the sponsors who made this exceptional day possible,” An-Mari said.
As the sun set the passengers landed safely back at Pango Camp where representatives from Merchant West handed out meal buckets at each child’s home.
