Elderly citizens visit Maropeng

Before embarking on their educational trip, they were treated to a delicious breakfast.

Despite some gray and rainy weather, Maropeng still saw an ocean of curious, wide-eyed senior citizens from the Mogale City Golden Oldies organisation, eager to learn more about their ancestors on Thursday, 15 February.

Before embarking on their educational trip, they were treated to a delicious breakfast by their main sponsor, mentor and partner, Sontaga Steven Monakisi. Each senior citzen also showed up beautifully dressed in red and white in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

This organisation – established in 2015 – is a group of senior citizens residing in surroundings of Mogale City who form a supportive network to see each other through both happy and sad times. Through this they are able to have fun, create memories and befriend one another with the help of the organisation.

“We simply saw the opportunity and established a support system for the elderly of Munsieville and Kagiso. We aim to offer them fun and emotionally supportive trips,” said Lebogang Menyatso, the chairperson of the Mogale City Golden Oldies.

Previous events include a trip to the Vaal River with the Rabie Ridge Golden Oldies, as well as annual Christmas celebrations. Lebogang went on to say that the organisation’s main objective is to expose their elders to local South African tourist destinations within and outside the Gauteng province.

“We want to elevate their platform of culture, to make them feel loved and important, and to reduce boredom and unhealthy lifestyles,” she said.

“Our plans are to see elderly individuals being themselves, contributing positively to our communities, and sharing stories and personal experiences with younger generations. We want to empower them by unearthing and showcasing their talents and teaching them further skills.”

Lebo added that they are also in the process of establishing an old age home for the homeless as well as those who are physically, emotionally and financially abused.
