Community hopes alleged rapist gets bail in order to teach him a lesson

Munsieville community members were quite upset at the Krugersdorp Magistrates' Court when a 42-year-old rape suspect made a brief appearance.

Last week, the community, waving banners and flags with anti-rape messages outside the court premises, pleaded with the court that the suspect be given bail so that they could ‘deal with him’. The messages on the banners and flags read, ‘#rapemustfall’ to ‘Real men do not rape’.

The case was postponed to 24 May for further investigation and for DNA results. The suspect remains in custody. According to the local police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashele, a case of rape was opened after an under-age girl was allegedly raped by a man known to her.

It is alleged that on Sunday, 25 February at about 1pm, the 12-year-old girl was playing outside with her friends, when the suspect enticed the victim with a bunny chow (kota). Mashele said the father of the victim said that his daughter was playing with a number of other children, but when he could no longer see her, he started to get worried.

The father subsequently approached the children and asked where his daughter was. They explained that she had left with a male they did not know. The girl arrived home later that day and informed her father that she had been raped by the suspect.

The girl was taken to the local hospital, and upon examination it was confirmed that she had been raped. She spent several days at the hospital as she was badly assaulted, both at the front and the back.

The suspect was arrested on 5 March in Monument after police received a tip-off from members of the community. Pule Mokonyane, Munsieville community leader, said the community is very angry about the incident.

“We are very angry at the violation of a young and innocent child. Some of our community members want to oppose bail because he is a danger to society, and others want the court to grant him bail so that they can teach him a very good lesson. We hope that he rots in jail and that this will serve as a deterrent to other rapists out there,” Mokonyane said outside the court.
