‘Mayor refuses to investigate mismanagement’
The DA released a statement to the News about the special meeting.
Mogale City’s 13th Special Council Meeting observed the true colours of Executive Mayor Naga Parick Lipudi.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) released a statement to the News about the special meeting which was held on 27 March.
“He categorically stated that he was not interested in launching an investigation into mismanagement at the Krugersdorp Game Reserve,” the statement reads. The Executive Mayor’s own report (tabled in Council) referred to “the poor management of the site, which has led to loss of biological assets and the rich biodiversity, including the dilapidation of fixed assets”.
The statement reads that the Mayor’s report acknowledged that it was the responsibility of Mogale City to ensure that the disturbance of ecosystems and loss of biological diversity were avoided. It must take reasonable measures to prevent environmental degradation.
Tyrone Gray, the Chief Whip of the Democratic Alliance, proposed that an additional recommendation be added to the report so that whoever was responsible could be held accountable. The Executive Mayor rejected the recommendation.
“The deterioration in the Game Reserve has spanned several years under the ANC local council. During the period, various management models have been undertaken, ranging from departmental supervision to appointing external service providers.
“The DA argues that the ANC’s refusal to investigate the causes of degradation in the Krugersdorp Game Reserve will negatively affect the selection of future service providers to manage the highly valued municipal asset.”
