Man points gun at police – gets arrested

The firearm was loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition.

The police are determined to remove dangerous and violent criminal activities from the streets, in order to restore the trust and pride in the law enforcement agencies that some members of the community have lost.

To prove this, they arrested a 28-year-old suspect on Monday, 1 April after he pointed an unlicensed firearm at them while they were conducting a stop and search operation.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police station, said the police officers spotted a group of men standing around a corner while they were busy with the operation and stopped them with the intention of searching them.

As they approached, the men tried to flee in different directions, but the police officers chased after them. One man drew a firearm and pointed it at the officers.

The officers managed to corner and apprehend him, after which he was disarmed.

“The suspect’s unlicensed firearm was loaded with thirteen rounds of ammunition. The firearm’s serial numbers were filed off,” said Sibiya.

The suspect was later detained at the Kagiso Police Station and a case docket of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened.

The culprit made a brief appearance in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody for further police investigation.
