Armed suspects shoot man after he refuses to hand over his hat

"The complainant sustained a gunshot wound to the left shoulder and was later rushed to hospital."

Four suspects aged between 19 and 28 were arrested on Wednesday, 18 April for attempted murder, following a shooting incident the previous week.

A man and four friends were allegedly walking along Eagle Street on Thursday, 12 April at about 7.30pm when they came across 10 suspects. The suspects accosted the group, demanding their hats. They refused to hand them over, and fled in different directions.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police, said one armed suspect drew a firearm and fired several shots at the group of friends.

“One man sustained a gunshot wound to the left shoulder and was later rushed to hospital. He then laid a complaint against the suspects at the Kagiso Police Station,” said Sibiya.

Kagiso Police launched an intensive investigation and a manhunt for the suspects and arrested some of them. The arrest was made possible by a concerned resident of Swaneville, who tipped the police off as to the suspects’ whereabouts after she had spotted them in the area.

Police responded swiftly and managed to apprehend four suspects. The other six suspects are still at large but investigations are continuing.

A case docket has been opened and the suspects are expected to appear briefly in court soon.
