Freedom Day Commemorative Lecture attracts many
This is why the programme, which was hosted by the Heritage, Arts and Culture section of the Municipality was well attended by various stakeholders.
The Kagiso Memorial and Recreational Centre was filled to the brim when the residents of Mogale City gathered to commemorate the day that led to the dawn of democracy – Freedom Day – which has been celebrated annually since 27 April 1994.
Freedom Day is a momentous day in South African history as it reminds the nation of a great milestone. The first-ever democratic elections were held in South Africa and every individual in the country was allowed to vote freely. The election brought hope and freedom to all South Africans after decades of colonialism and white minority domination.
This is why the programme, which was hosted by the Heritage, Arts and Culture section of the Municipality was well attended by various stakeholders on Sunday, 29 April.
The audience consisted of local citizens from various institutions as well as dignitaries from Mogale City Local Municipality, namely the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Sports, Recreation, Heritage, Arts and Culture, councillor Charmaine Ntlatlane-Nzwane; Executive Mayor councillor Naga Patrick Lipudi; Gauteng Member of the Executive Council for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko, and members of the media such as SABC News and Power FM.
The two keynote speakers, Minister Nomvula Mokonyane and political activist Zara Ben Ntsimane captivated the audience with heartfelt and genuine memories of the tribulations and triumphs that the people of Mogale City endured and conquered during the Apartheid regime.
In her address, Mokonyane said that Mogale City must celebrate all local citizens, especially young struggle fighters who fought for liberation this year.
She further explained that Malaza was a victim of the 1976 student riots in Kagiso. He died in Krugersdorp Prison from injuries sustained when he was beaten severely by the Apartheid police.
The programme ended with entertainment from local cultural dance groups and a poet whose performances brought a smile to those in attendance.
