Young women commended for their writing
Elsie explained that the Grade 6 girls were given the topic 'Five minutes with the president' while the Grade 7 girls were asked to write about 'Women performers'.
Recently Lesego Primary School – a rather underprivileged school situated in Muldersdrift – received a very special visit from several enthusiasts who are passionate about women empowerment.
Leading the group was Elsie Phumzile, who has been involved with the school for almost two years. Each month she visits the school in an effort to provide the Grade 6 and 7 girls with sanitary pads.

She then came up with the idea of giving them something to look forward to and decided to host a creative writing competition among the 60 girls.
On Monday, 7 May, she teamed up with the Krugersdorp Lions Club, the Ruimsig Tennis Club, Alice Art Gallery and volunteer Leanne Johnsen to commend these underprivileged girls for their extraordinary writing skills.

Elsie explained that the Grade 6 girls were given the topic ‘Five minutes with the president’, while the Grade 7 girls were asked to write about ‘Women performers’. Both of the topics were aimed at teaching these young girls about women empowerment, and that they, as young women, have a voice.
The winners are as follows:
First place: Dudzile Mojela
Second place: Moholo Kgomotsego
Grade 7:
First place: Cindy Mpofu
Second place: Sibanda Sithokozile
The top two winners in each grade received some amazing prizes. The top five received framed certificates and the top 10 received some special hampers. Each girl also received their pads as part of Elsie’s ongoing monthly visits.
School principal Kagiso Lerumo is very thankful for Elsie’s hard work and said that she is a huge asset and inspiration to these young girls, who are also the future of the country.
