Man who raped 13-year-old sentenced

“Any crime against women in general and children in particular, will receive our undivided attention."

A man who raped a 13-year-old girl in November 2016 was found guilty and received a hefty sentence for his crime.

The case, which was concluded in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court recently, was praised as a great success, after investigating officer, Sergeant Thabo Au obtained adequate evidence to prove the case in court.

The victim was playing outside with her friends when the rapist called her indoors. He then cornered her and raped her. He received a 18-year prison sentence. The convicted rapist’s name will not be mentioned to protect the identity of the victim.

Lieutenant Colonel Kathy Segotta, commander of the Family Violence, Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) commended the investigating officer on the successful conclusion of this case.

“Any crime against women in general and children in particular, will receive our undivided attention. We applaud our colleagues at the National Prosecuting Authority and Justice Department for the manner in which this case was concluded. Sergeant Au also did his part in securing this outcome,” said Segotta.
