Water problems haunt Krugersdorp
Here's some reasons for the water issues, and what you can do to report them.
Krugersdorpers have been burdened with water supply issues for the past two weeks and have expressed their annoyance with the Mogale City Local Municipality for its inability to provide this basic service.
The initial cause of the water shortages in Krugersdorp was said to be the theft of electrical cables, as the consequent loss of power to parts of the Emfuleni Municipality had an impact on the pumping capability of the Vereeniging Pumping station. This had a knock-on impact on the Meredale Reservoir in Johannesburg South which provides water to Krugersdorp.
It took about a week for water pressure to return to normal after the electricity had been restored, but residents of Dan Pienaarville, Kenmare and Krugersdorp North still had little to no water pressure.

The News soon learnt that there were two burst water pipes – one in Krugersdorp North, on Douglas de Villiers Street, and the other on Robert Broom Drive.
After the pipes had been repaired, water was restored to most parts of Krugersdorp. However, not long afterwards, Amanda de Lange, councillor for the Freedom Front Plus, reported another three-day water outage.
The reason for the water cuts has not yet been communicated by the municipality.
“It is not just residents and businesses that are held to ransom; employees in the water department who are expected to attend to problems without the necessary equipment to fix them also suffer. Workers are expected to work without the required safety clothing and due to inadequate staff numbers, they also have to work very long hours,” said De Lange.
“Follow-up discussions with Rand Water are needed to get to the root of the continuous water outage problems, and to establish whether the vast amounts owed to Rand Water by Mogale City are part of the problem.”
