Why is Monument Dam so green?
"Due to the lack of rain during the winter, there isn't enough rain water to wash the culvert."
Regular visitors who frequent Monument Dam recently noticed a slight greenish tinge to the water.
Photos were sent to the News by a concerned resident, who said she believed the green colour to be the result of sewage water being directed from the nearby shopping centre into the dam.
The News contacted the management of Key West Shopping Centre immediately for comment.
The management team asked us to reiterate that Monument Dam falls under the control and administration of the Mogale City Local Municipality and does not belong to Key West Shopping Centre; however, they do offer selected services to assist Mogale City with the maintenance of the dam.

“We have been in discussions with Mogale regarding the allegations and they have confirmed that the water will undergo testing.
Key West is contracted to an independent company which tests the water every half-year. The next test was scheduled for September but will be brought forward, to June.
“Monument Dam is a storm-water retention dam for water that is channelled from various residential areas in Krugersdorp through the municipality’s system of storm-drains and underground pipes. The water is then dumped into a culvert which runs underneath Key West into the dam.
“Due to the lack of rain during the winter, there isn’t enough rain water to wash the culvert, or fill the dam with rain water,” management’s statement reads.
As soon as the test results are available, an update will be published.
