Police urge motorists to be extra vigilant
Maduna advised that motorists should familiarise themselves with the area they are visiting.
Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna said in a statement that car theft and hijacking can be avoided if motorists take note of a few important factors.
Maduna mentioned that most of the complaints the station receives are from motorists who have parked their vehicles next to a gate or on a pavement, and even in isolated spots during the night.
“What makes it worse is that some even spend hours at local taverns and night clubs and leave very late or even the next morning,” the statement reads.
He said that those parking in deserted areas make themselves more vulnerable. Those under the influence of alcohol or any other illegal substance also put a target on their backs.

“Constantly check your rear-view and side mirrors for any movement or suspicious activity. Be alert when approaching intersections or on- or off-ramps, and be prepared to take evasive action when necessary. Do not fall prey to some of the oldest tricks in the book, like when someone passing points out something ‘wrong’ with your vehicle as it may very well be a trap. Drive to the nearest police station or petrol station for help.”
