‘They want to throw us away like a skroplap’

Most of these outsourced guards have been responsible for community safety for more than five years.

On Friday, 28 September approximately 200 security guards who were outsourced by the municipality and recently laid off, demanded answers when they marched from the corner of Market and Burger Streets to the Mogale City Local Municipality offices.

Most of these guards have been responsible for community safety for more than five years. They guarded local facilities such as libraries, centres, crèches, parks, halls, cemeteries, sports centres and the town hall.

They now request urgent intervention in their alleged unfair dismissal without valid reason.

“We feel that the relevant labour legislation of the Republic of South Africa has not been applied. We want the municipality to take us seriously with regard to our work experience and skills in community safety,” Lawrence Sadiq said.

Another unhappy dismissed guard, Abel Sekqa alleged that the new security company will be working for less than half the payment they are supposed to receive.

“They let us go just so that they can pocket that difference in money,” he said.
After the memorandum was handed over to the Executive Mayor, councillor Naga Patrick Lipudi, he requested to be allowed seven days to consider their request.

“We are waiting for an answer. We are not weak and corrupt like other security companies. We deserve our jobs to feed our families,” Godfrey Ngeope said.
