Yusuf Dadoo hosts successful Health Care Waste Awareness event
Representatives from different spheres of government shared their expertise.
Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital staff received free training on health-care waste management during a Health Care Waste Awareness Day.
According to Environmental Health Practitioner, Nyeleti Zitha the purpose of the event was to inform all health-care workers that health-care waste has the potential to cause harm to patients, staff members, the general public as well as the environment if it not properly managed.
Representatives from different spheres of government shared their expertise after the CEO of the hospital, Patrick Mbeko Sofohlo had given a warm welcome to all on Thursday, 13 September.
Topics discussed during the day included the Role of Environmental Health in Waste Management, presented by Ramsook Loykisoonlal, Deputy Director at the National Department of Health, in the Environmental Health and Port Health Services Cluster; Waste Management Research by the Assistant Director for Research, Policy and Capacity Development, Rudo Samudzi at the Gauteng Department of Health: Directorate of Health Care Waste and Occupational Hygiene Risk Management; Green and Healthy Hospitals, presented Azeeza Rangunwala who is the Assistant Director for Research, Policy and Capacity Development at the Gauteng Department of Health: Directorate of Health Care Waste and Occupational Hygiene Risk Management; the Positive and Negative Impacts of Waste Management, which were discussed by Seyanokeng Ntloana, Chief Health Care Waste Officer from Central Office.
Departments and individuals were awarded with certificates and a floating trophy for complying with proper waste management regulations.
